For over-the-phone interpretation and many video remote assignments, professional experience and demonstrated language fluency are often sufficient to get started. Many talented interpreters built successful freelance careers without formal certification.
However, certain high-value settings require or strongly prefer certified interpreters. These include:

Some professional interpretation experience is required, but it does not need to be formal employment. Community interpretation, volunteer work in medical or legal settings, or consistent freelance interpretation work all count. If you are fluent in two or more languages and have real-world experience helping people communicate across language barriers, we encourage you to apply.
Absolutely. Many of our community members work in both translation and interpretation. Your MotaWord vendor profile can reflect both skill sets, and you can receive assignment requests for either. If you are already a registered translator on MotaWord, you can add interpretation to your profile directly from your dashboard.
Certification is not required to register, but it is strongly preferred for healthcare and legal assignments. Certified interpreters are prioritized for those assignment types in our matching system. If you hold an NBCMI, CCHI, CLAC, RID, or equivalent certification, make sure to include it in your profile. If you are not yet certified, you can still receive assignments in other settings while you work toward certification.
No invoicing is required. When you complete an assignment, your earnings are automatically confirmed and recorded in your vendor dashboard. Payment is processed within 15 days of assignment completion. You can track all your earnings and payment history in real time through your account.
