Why MotaWord Exists
For years the translation industry worked on a trade-off: speed, quality or lower cost, and you could only have two. Rush a translation and quality slipped or its price increased. Focus on quality and you had to wait, because one translator worked through the file alone. Even getting a quote involved emailing a project manager back and forth.
MotaWord was founded in 2013 by a translation industry veteran who saw that cloud technology had removed the reason for that trade-off. The platform opened to clients in 2014 with instant document recognition and quoting, and with collaborative translation: many certified linguists working on the same document at the same time, while an editor reviews every string.

MotaWord is founded
Evren Ay, a translation industry veteran, founded MotaWord on a simple conviction: technology could make translation faster for clients. At the time, a quote meant emailing files to a project manager and waiting for a reply.
Launch, and the first clients
MotaWord opened to clients with two things built in from day one: instant online document recognition and quoting, and a collaborative cloud model that puts multiple certified linguists on the same document at once. Clients no longer emailed files and waited for a price.
Translation API released
MotaWord released its translation API so companies could request translations, track status and receive finished files automatically from their own products and content systems. Translation became part of the release cycle instead of a separate step.
One of 8 winners of the NYC–Paris Business Exchange
New York City's Economic Development Corporation named MotaWord one of 8 winners of its NYC–Paris Business Exchange, chosen from hundreds of applicants. The program gave New York start-ups six months of operating in Paris, with mentoring from business experts in both cities.
French Tech Ticket and a base in Paris
MotaWord won the French Tech Ticket program, which brought incubation support and a base in France. Within its first six months there, MotaWord signed European clients and raised $500K from a French strategic partner, running operations from Paris alongside New York.
Partnership with Nordic Innovation House
MotaWord partnered with Nordic Innovation House, a network of business hubs in Silicon Valley, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong that helps Nordic companies enter new markets. MotaWord helps its member companies translate and adapt their content for the US market.
Joins AILA's member benefits program
MotaWord became the translation provider in the American Immigration Lawyers Association's member benefits program. AILA represents more than 15,000 attorneys, and MotaWord has since served more than 3,000 immigration lawyers with certified translation in 120+ languages.
Google Drive integration
MotaWord connected to Google Drive, so clients can send documents for translation and receive the finished files without downloading and re-uploading them.
Clio integration launches
Law firms using Clio can order translations from inside Clio. There is no downloading, uploading or emailing documents to get a translation started.

In its launch year, MotaWord's Clio integration was named Best New App at the Clio Integration Awards.
MotaWord Active launches
MotaWord Active launched as a website translation tool that works through a single line of code, so companies can go multilingual without rebuilding their site. IGA Istanbul Airport became its first large client later that year.
Academic evaluation services launch
MotaWord began offering academic evaluation, with Mark Rogers joining as Head of Evaluation Services. The service evaluates foreign diplomas, degrees and transcripts against US standards for immigration, education and employment.
SOC 2 Type II certified
MotaWord achieved SOC 2 Type II compliance, an independent audit developed by the AICPA that checks how a company protects customer data. For clients sending sensitive legal and medical documents, it confirms security controls work in practice over time, not just on paper.
Docketwise integration
Immigration lawyers using Docketwise can translate and evaluate client documents without leaving their case management software.
Visalaw.ai integration
